Display Inspirations for Winter 2009

You have a set of merchandise that you want to showcase beautifully. How do you go about creating an eye-catching display in a few easy steps? Here’s how. Visual merchandiser Donna Kent worked with nautical-themed merchandise at the gift shop at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts.

1. Begin by reviewing merchandise. Select product based on theme and color. Make sure you have a variety of sizes, textures and materials. Collect a variety of appropriate display fixtures (Plexiglas build-ups, plate stands, risers) and any appropriate theme-specific props. Select largest pieces (or focal piece) and place in position to anchor display. image

2. Keep height at (roughly) top center, and balance large-scale items throughout. Add risers to gain and vary heights or as here, use product as self-build up. Stack product to elevate. Use good-looking boxes to add height.

3. Add medium-sized product ensuring balance while doing so. image

4. Add small products. Make sure they are evenly distributed. Angle the merchandise at the sides, slightly inward.

5. Add display props. Here we use sea-colored stones and starfish. Add any appropriate signage/pricing. image

6. Add background piece of interest at back of display. Here we use a framed print. Review entire display and make sure there is height at the center. It is best to have a triangle shape and different levels of build-ups. Make sure merchandise is easily accessible for shopping.

These principles can apply to any other locations: table, wall and freestanding fixtures as well.
