Sparkling Jewelry Trends By Sharon Naylor

Wrap bracelets
are just one of the hot jewelry trends. Find out what else makes the category shine.

There’s something shining in retail these days: jewelry sales are up. According to the 2010 Annual Census Report from Accessories Magazine and leading consumer research firm The NPD Group, Inc., consumers are “definitely spending on [accessories] again.”

What’s making jewelry sales sparkle? Our experts say that customers who, in these challenging financial times, cannot afford to buy new wardrobes opt to ‘dress up’ their existing little black dresses, business suits and casual wear with new pieces of jewelry. A dazzling accessory gives new life to an outfit.

Another reason jewelry designs are selling well: They fit. There’s no worry about clothing sizes, no anxiety about trying on clothing. So consumers of every size, from 0 to plus-size find these fashion purchases to be entirely satisfying.

Lauren Parker, editor of Accessories Magazine provides a third reason why jewelry sales continue to sparkle for you: “Department store jewelry leans toward the more mass produced, while gift shop jewelry tends to be more artisan in character.” Consumers looking for something original, a standout that makes a statement, has a story and impresses friends, will come to you for their jewelry picks.

In a market where trends change very easily, it’s helpful to know what’s selling well now. Here is a broad look at some hot jewelry trends.
