Crafting partnerships: Six women start co-op gift shop in Arnaudville
Arnaudville, LA -Six St. Landry Parish women have turned to a trusted business model to grow their new gift shop during challenging economic times.
Acadiana Country Crafts opened earlier this month in Arnaudville using some of the principles of a co-op business.
The gift shop was formed by six women who met selling wares a local flea market.
“Each person had a different product and a different interest,” said co-owner Ginger LeCompte. “I thought it would be great to be able to fill a store with all of them.”
With an initial investment of about $150 each, the six partners leased house at 1506 Courtableau Highway.
They share recurring expenses like rent, utilities and insurance at about $70 each.
“We discovered that by pooling our resources … there was so much more potential there for everyone to succeed,” LeCompte said. “The risk was diminished substantially.”
Each partner has her own logo and each earns profits from their individual products. LeCompte sells religious and inspirational gifts, while other partners offer items like gift baskets, jewelry, botanicals and candles.
“It’s like a business incubator,” said co-owner Jacque Alvares, who specializes in clothing.
“It’s a good way for us to get started, and hopefully be able to branch out on our own later on.”
Many of the partners have full-time jobs, but the gift shop is only open on weekends. LeCompte said having five business partners allows her the flexibility to schedule work around family events, not vice versa.
