The Country Chick opens in old Spark’s GroceryBy Ashley BergtholdHerald-Citizen.com

Cookeville — Cookeville residents driving down Hudgens Street near Capshaw Elementary School will notice a new business is a historic location. The Country Chick opened at 618 E. Hudgens Street in the old Spark’s Grocery store in mid-February.

Heather Bean and her mother, Bonnie Bowman, opened the Country Chick two months ago as an antique and cookie shop. The family business quickly expanded to include antiques, gifts and a menu featuring soups, sandwiches, casseroles and a large variety of desserts.

“I don’t have a fancy cooking career like most people who have recently opened restaurants in Cookeville,” said Bean. “The food we have here is food like I would cook it at home. We have a different special every week. We bake four to five different kinds of cookies, cakes and pies daily.”

According to Bean, the most popular item on the menu besides the homemade cookies is a chicken salad sandwich called the city girl and Jeana’s Sourdough Bread — homemade and sold by the loaf.

The gift shop portion of the Country Chick offers a variety of boutique items such as jewelry, antiques and home decor.
