Danville businesses join national campaign
Danville, VA — When Sylvia Josey heard about The 3/50 Project, she jumped on board.
The project started as a blog post by retail consultant Cinda Baxter in March 2009 urging people to save their local economy by choosing three independent local brick-and-mortar businesses and spending $50 a month at those businesses.
The campaign exploded over the Internet and in national media over the past year.
Josey, owner of Your Stuff and Kids’ Stuff consignment boutiques on Piney Forest Road in Danville, was reminded to support the campaign through the National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops and put up signs and fliers in her store.
“I want to see Danville’s economy thrive,” Josey said. “I want to see everyone who lives in Danville and the surrounding area have a higher standard of living.”
She doesn’t think many people in Danville know about The 3/50 Project, but she would like to remind residents to buy local because that money circulates in the local economy
For instance, a Civic Economics study commissioned by the Austin Independent Business Alliance in 2003 concluded that locally-owned merchants generate more than three times the local economic activity of their competitor chain stores on equal revenue.
