Four Key Trends Identified For NY NOW’s “Open House” Project

Four key home design trends for 2013-2014, ranging from vintage to neo-traditional, will be showcased in the “Open House” exhibit which returns for the second time to NY NOW®, the Market for Home & Lifestyle (formerly NYIGF®), August 17-21, 2013, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The themes – Monochromatic, Neo-Traditional, Well-Cultured and Vintage… with a Twist – also will be explored in a related seminar, presented by project sponsors One Kings Lane and Sandow Media, publishers of Gifts & Decorative Accessories, Home Accents Today and Home Textiles Today.

“The Open House program offers valuable insights into design trends that will be important to the home and lifestyle industries in the coming year,” said Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. “This forecast, which will be brought to life in a curated exhibit, will showcase products that are reflective as well as predictive of these design directions.”

The four trends, as well as their inspirations and expressions, were identified by editors from Gifts & Decorative Accessories,Home Accents Today and Home Textiles Today. The merchandising team from One Kings Lane, the leading online marketplace for the home, confirmed the trends and paired them with a color forecast, and will review and select NY NOW exhibitor submissions relating to each.

Monochromatic – Trend #1
The monochromatic design theme represents simplicity and sophistication at the same time. It is shown in black and white, as well as multiple shades of a single hue, especially shades of gray. Classic geometric patterns, elegant animal prints, chevrons and latticework convey the theme in pattern.

Neo-Traditional – Trend #2
A cleaner, simpler type of traditional – a postmodern pushback – is emerging, with over scaled versions of time-honored motifs rather than heavy embellishment and ornamentation. It is shown in oversize lace, damask and other classic prints and patterns in jewel-tone colors, such as plum and teal.

Vintage… with a Twist – Trend #3
The vintage trend continues, but changes through the use of repurposed products and details in ways the original designers did not intend. New treasures are created from old parts and aged woods with patina finishes.

Well-Cultured – Trend #4
The colors and materials of Africa, Asia and Latin America provide inspiration for design, textiles, embellishments and colors from the exotic to the esoteric. The trend is expressed through handcrafts, fusion colors, and unique and intricate prints and textures.

The “Open House” trend display, which is located in the North Concourse at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Center, will be open August 17-21, 2013, during all NY NOW hours. A complete list of products selected for display will be available in late June.

In connection with the display, a seminar titled “Open House – Key Trends In Home Products” will explore trends influencing home products and sales, including materials, color, commerce and branding. Warren Shoulberg of Sandow Media and a representative from One Kings Lane will explore the trends and supporting color-ways on Sunday, August 18, from 8:30am to 9:30am, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Tickets cost $20 advance/$25 onsite, and registration is available online at www.nynow.com/programs.

As an extension of these at-market activities, select products from the “Open House” display will be sold at One Kings Lane during NY NOW, with proceeds benefitting Gift For Life, the industry’s sole charity partner. The online charity sale will begin on Saturday, August 17th, on www.onekingslane.com.

NY NOW, the Market for Home & Lifestyle, will run Saturday, August 17, through Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94. NY NOW’s four comprehensive collections –HOME, LIFESTYLE, HANDMADE and NEW! – will encompass 100,000 products in 400+ product categories. Some 35,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 80 countries worldwide are expected. Information and registration is available online at www.nynow.com.
