Elgin — Three women, pals for years, never dreamed that their paths would cross in the business world.

A few things needed to fall in place before each would become separate entrepreneurs in downtown Elgin. A year-long effort to find financial backing ended in late October, when the trio opened doors to their respective businesses: Lily Falls Gift Boutique, 10 Douglas Ave.; and Ravenheart Coffee and Salon Couture, both in the same building at the northwest corner of East Chicago and North Spring streets, which previously housed a bank branch.

Vicki Zibert, owner of the gift shop, said the trio shares more than friendship and geography. All were bankrolled by business owner Jerri McCue and her husband John, Zibert noted.

The three women thought an offer to lease the Chicago Street property from a businessman who was planning to buy it was a done deal. In fact, Nell Hughes, owner of the salon, was busy renovating her space in the building when she learned the potential property owner/leasing agent had backed out of the deal.
