Handmade Expressions’ Video Tape Wristlets Celebrated for Excellence in Design

Washington, DC – Handmade Expressions, an Austin, TX-based Fair Trade wholesaler, has been recognized by the Fair Trade Federation for outstanding work in the field of product design for their recycled video tape women’s accessories.

Made in India by disabled artisans, these ‘wristlet bags’ offer vocational education to young adults while preparing them to become financially self-sufficient and self-employed. Most raw materials are donated or recycled, underscoring the eco-friendly nature of the process and the resulting products.

“The sourcing of sustainable materials – recycled video tape and 100% natural cotton – protects the local ecosystem and the planet,” says product designer Ruchi Agrawal, “And the design itself – hip size, trendy colors – enables a direct connection between the artisan in India and the American consumer.”

As a Fair Trade Organization, Handmade Expressions has been rigorously evaluated for their full commitment to nine Fair Trade Principles that include transparency, capacity-building, paying promptly and fairly, environmental sustainability, and respect for cultural identify. Their products are available at retailers across the United States, Canada, and India.

“Handmade Expressions stood out among the eight nominees for our 2010 Excellence in Product Design Award,” says Carmen K. Iezzi, Fair Trade Federation executive director. “Their innovative and responsible use of materials has resulted in a great product that creates a tremendous positive impact on artisans’ lives.”

Since 2005, Handmade Expressions has been committed to improving the standing of underprivileged people by creating self-sustainable employment through the sale of distinctive handcrafted bags, accessories, tree-free journals, and other products. They have been members of the Fair Trade Federation, the trade association that strengthens and promotes North American organizations fully committed to Fair Trade, since 2005.
