Newark florist blossoms with unique giftsBy Tara FehrNJ.com

International Florist Gift Shop & Fruit Baskets Inc. 283 Lafayette St. Valentine’s Day inspired my selection this month. I know there are many who argue that it is a commercial day, but the truth remains just as many are looking for a good gift for their significant others. International Florist Gift Shop & Fruit Baskets offers options that might satisfy the romantic and the cynic.

In the interest of full disclosure, I probably lean more toward the romantic side. I don’t need flowers, but I appreciate a thoughtful gesture, which is why I like this spot. Anybody can order flowers from a website, but International Flowers Gifts & Fruit Baskets provide more of an intimate sentiment behind the gift. You can personalize a gift or design a unique arrangement.

Now about the store, first I have to say I’m sorry. I can’t save you from the rising costs of roses this time of year. This is the holiday season for florists, and the Ironbound shop is no different. This is their busiest time of the year. A dozen roses can cost up to $65 – off season prices can cost up to $50. But of course they offer discounts (or else I wouldn’t be telling you about them) and they offer intangibles that may soften the Valentine’s Day commercial reputation.

“We’re a business with emotions,” co-owner Manny Pimentel said.

Offering flowers and gifts for every occasion, they provide personal attention to their customers, which inevitably shares in their celebrations and sorrows. Customers seek flowers for weddings, funerals and everything in between.

“We’re all about service,” said other co-owner and brother, Michael Pimentel. “You can’t compare us to 800-FLOWERS and other conglomerates. We will design anything.”

Some of their floral designs can be spotted at the Gateway. But they sell many products to fit multiple occasions. They even sell a line of Lennox, with an option of personalizing it for their customers. They also sell silk flowers, plants, balloons, collectibles, stuffed animals and cards. It’s like Hallmark with flowers, except it is family-owned.
