In a city with little to buy except a pack of gum or a bottle of gin, Neva’s Affordables is quite the change of pace. By stocking items custom tailored to the Lake Cities and working a niche market, Neva’s attracts a lot more than typical last minute shoppers.

“At this time I am really the only gift shop in town,” says owner and shopkeeper Neva Sudderth.

She looks around at trinkets scattered throughout the store, from candles to Harley-Davidson items. She blinks, taking it all in.

“I am the only gift shop in town now,” says Sudderth, now sure of herself after thinking about her shop.

The store, while facing the fact that she’s in a location not thought of as a shopper’s paradise, has its edge in its items that Sudderth picks out to target a niche market of customers.

She uses not only gift items to attract customers from Lake Dallas, she uses its eclectic mix of people to her advantage. The neighborhoods in the area have a large population of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Sudderth, who owns a cycle and proudly displays Harley stickers on her wall, knows how to work a crowd- the motorcycle crowd, many of whom live in the Lake Cities.
