Niermann’s Eleanor McKay to cover lighting issues at Las Vegas Design Center

(LAS VEGAS) – Las Vegas Design Center at World Market Center will welcome Niermann Weeks CEO Eleanor McKay on Friday, November 7, 2008 for a presentation about today’s lighting industry.

McKay’s presentation, “Lighting Today: Lighting in the Post-Incandescent World,” will take place from 10 -11:30 a.m. during the monthly First Friday event. McKay’s lecture will take place in the Las Vegas Design Center seminar room, (C-316) of World Market Center’s Building C, 475 South Grand Central Parkway in Las Vegas.

With information gathered from Niermann Weeks, which designs and produces lighting, and other industry leaders, attendees will hear how manufacturers will handle the phasing out of the incandescent light bulb. Designers will gain insights on how to draw inspiration, stay relevant, pay attention to detail, tune in to client needs and protect their designs in the ever-changing interior design industry.

McKay said she plans to cover how the U.S. energy law has changed, with the incandescent bulb on its way out in 2012. According to McKay, the replacements on the market do not quite work and are extraordinarily expensive. Many also do not dim. “We need a really good alternative,” McKay said. “Designers need to lobby intensively with their lighting suppliers.” McKay will show samples and cover the law, including incandescents, LED’s, compact fluorescents and halogens along with ways they are used or cannot be used as substitutes for incandescent bulbs. I want to make people aware that the American policy has changed and there is not yet an adequate substitute for incandescent chandelier light bulbs. What is the point of having a light bulb that does not dim?”

Designers need to be aware about changes in the law regarding light bulbs, McKay said. “I am trying to create viral agitation. Between 2012 and 2020 light bulbs have to be 70 percent more effective than incandescents. There is not anything out there that is a good substitute for chandeliers and as a lighting manufacturer and designer we are very concerned. The information I am presenting is important for anyone who uses light bulbs needs to be educated about.”
