Opelousas residents are accustomed to seeing Ken’s Thrifty Way Pharmacy on Prudhomme Lane, where it has stood for 39 years.

And while the pharmacy and gift shop will continue to occupy its same familiar location, Ken’s Thrifty Way has expanded its home medical supply department and moved it last week to a second location at 7591 I-49 Service Road South, just north of the city.

It was time for that department, which was established in the 1980s and reincarnated in its new building as Ken’s Home Medical Equipment, to have its own space, said Tonya Roberie, senior team leader for durable medical equipment and calendars.

Because of space limitations at the Prudhomme Lane location, the home medical equipment was kept in the storeroom at the back of the store.

“Before, we used to have to go and get an item and show it to the patients. Now, they can see the items and choose what they want,” said Tammy Robert, director of operations and daughter of founders Ken and Janelle Savoie.

“Now, when patients walk in this week, they’re astonished at what we offer,” Roberie said.
