With the average gasoline price on Long Island at more than $4 a gallon, small businesses adapt to rising operating costs and the economic crunch. Here’s how some are coping:

A former New York City correction officer, Virginia Russell now runs the VIP Basket Store in Bellmore, where she sells and delivers gift baskets and flowers with business partner Minya Li, of the flower shop Possibilities Unlimited.

She loves running her own business but is more and more concerned about the rising cost of gas. She has limited her delivery area – on a case-by-case basis – and also has instituted a fuel surcharge on deliveries.

“We deliver products all over Long Island, so unfortunately we have had to increase our delivery charges,” Russell said. “These are individual orders and people order it today and they want it today and we don’t have the option of shipping.”
