New quilting shop opens just off Square
After working from her house doing custom quilting and sewing for customers, Chanelle Bonham thought it was time to open her own store.
When she noticed that Kitchen Thyme, a kitchen supply store, was vacating the premises at 10 W. Kansas St., she quickly inquired about the space. Bonham held an open house April 13 at Quilt’n Down Home.
“I wanted to expand my business,” the mother of two said about moving her home-based business to town.
The shop is filled with colorful bolts of fabrics, spools of thread, quilting supplies, how-to books, unique buttons and gift items. Samples of quilts made by Bonham adorn the walls or hang on quilt hangers. A quilt she made for her brother out of his old sports T-shirts is on display for others to emulate.
Bonham also plans to offer a variety of quilting and sewing classes. She will also continue to offer custom quilting at her home.
“The classes will be for beginners to experts,” she said. “We have one woman who is going to teach how to make a basic maple leaf block. If we have a demand for something, we’ll offer it.”
Bonham said she had an “entourage of ladies” who helped her select fabrics such as the Boy Scout and batik lines she has in stock.
