New facility houses much more than plants
There is something special about Portage la Prairie’s newest greenhouse that is making it the talk of the town.
Solomon’s Home Garden Gift, located on 25th Street N.W., opened on May 2, and is already receiving rave reviews.
“It’s very bright and cheery,” said co-owner Aileen Solomon, adding customers are quite pleased with the new design.
Formerly known as Prairie Blossom, the new, expanded Solomon’s offers a great deal more for garden lovers.
It is more like a garden centre and a marketplace in one.
“It’s very spacious and it has the gift store,” Aileen pointed out.
The new location has a great deal of natural light pouring into the facility and will now open year-round for customers to enjoy.
As well, the structure is designed so the roof will open when the weather is nice.
“There are lots of windows, so you feel like you are shopping outside, all under cover,” said Aileen.
Currently, the centre offers a selection of plants, including basic bedding plants and pots, baskets and perennials, as well as vegetables.
Aileen said because the centre will be open throughout the year, she and her husband, co-owner Jim Solomon, also want to expand into house plants and offer a wider selection of garden items.
She noted the gift shop already has proven popular and includes an array of gift items as well as home decor ideas, a baby line, purses, china, patio furniture and some art.
“There is a little bit of everything,” said Aileen.
The new facility is also bigger in size than Solomon’s old operation. The new centre is 16,128 sq. feet (1,451 sq. metres).
