O.C.’s First ‘Cash Mob’ Strikes
Fountain Valley, CA – At 11:23 a.m. Saturday, Bonnie Tucker was on her cell phone. Tucker, a life-long Fountain Valley resident, was getting ready to mob the T-Shirt Wholesale Outlet on Talbert Avenue with 43 of her neighbors, and she was getting last-minute buying instructions from her daughter.
Cash mobs have been striking at independently owned small businesses across the country, but this gathering was the first one to hit Orange County. (Another is scheduled 6 p.m.-9 p.m. April 25 at El Pollo Norteno in Garden Grove, organized by a separate group.)
What’s a cash mob?
It’s a do-it-yourself economic boost. A group of people pick a local business and a time, descend en masse to spend $20 or so each, and leave. Some head to a nearby bar or restaurant to socialize.
