Quilting shop opens in downtown Omro
Omro – If anyone had told Maria Brewer she’d move her shop from among the whispering pines on her rural property in Berlin to the hustle and bustle of a small city on State Highway 21, she might not have believed it.
But, that’s just where she is.
Two years ago, at an age when some women are thinking retirement, Brewer decided to make a foray into the retail world. Quilting and quilting supplies were the obvious choice.
“I like fabric. I’m a quilter. It’s wonderful I can do this – be connected to quilters,” Brewer said.
Whispering Pines Gift and Quilt Shoppe, Brewer’s shop at 100 W. Main St. in the heart of downtown Omro is a colorful place with more than 1,000 bolts of fabric lining the walls, shelves loaded with candles, lotions and soaps from Brewers’ daughter’s Oshkosh store, called the Golden Goat; scarves, purses, hand made greeting cards she sells on consignment, picture frames and numerous other gifts.
The large storefront windows allow for lots of natural light. They provide a vantage point for Brewer to view the world. More importantly, she said, these windows allow passersby a glimpse of what she sells.
“I love the big windows. Everybody can see in,” she said.
