Deborah Ann’s Rainbow SCORES a win in DennisportBy Nicole MullerWickedLocal.com

Dennisport – Debbie Hagen never set out to build a better mousetrap.

But on June 2, the owner of Deborah Ann’s Rainbow in Dennisport will be among 15 Cape business owners honored by SCORE for, “having survived the critical first five years of operation and appear to be headed for long-term success.”

Seven years ago the Boston-born nurse who grew up in Provincetown and now lives in Chatham made a life change. “I had burned out and taken a meditation class that looked at Ruth Fishel’s book “How To Change Everything in 21 Days,” Hagen said.

Hagen wrote out a life-changing affirmation five times a day for 21 days to change her pattern. “I wrote that I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m ready for whatever’s coming next,” she said.

Three weeks later, Hagen saw an ad that invited readers to open a gift shop. “I called the Realtor, came to this site, looked in the windows and went home literally feeling the spirit of the shop,” she said. Hagen took out a home equity loan to finance the shop, and she admits the venture has been costly.

“But what I have learned about me is worth every penny,” she said. “I learned to take risks, that it’s OK to make mistakes and that people are people no matter where you are.

The rainbow

Hagen named the shop after her inner child, Deborah Ann. “Rainbow is the Christian symbol for hope,” she said. “People laugh and say I’m the pot of gold in Dennisport.

A chakra, or rainbow wand necklace, has become Hagen’s signature jewelry. “[Chatham artist] Jill Slowick-James made them for my shop,” said Hagen. “It serves as a reminder of the energy centers that control my moods.”

Among the shop’s offerings are inspirational CDs, Buddhas, fountains, jewelry, angels, soaps, candles, incense, books, baby gifts and a variety of rainbow-themed articles and vibrantly striped gift wrap.

The shop’s aura is tranquil. Exploring its nooks and crannies is a gentle, relaxed experience.
