Boston, MA — Psychology tricks is the driving force behind a casino’s success, and the gaming industry has long profited by tapping into what makes us tick.

Everything from floor plan to ambient music is carefully orchestrated to cultivate an atmosphere of leisure and excitement. Done well, the result is more gambling.

You may not think of Las Vegas or Atlantic City when you shop at your local supermarket or browse the racks at a department store, but many are reaching into the same bag of mind games.

“Some of the casinos had experimented with scent therapies, where they actually were nebulizing different scent molecules into the air-conditioning system to create a mood feeling,” says Steve Karoul, president and CEO of Euro-Asia Casino Consulting, a consultant to the industry. “Later, I read that some of the big shopping malls were doing the same thing to put people in a relaxed mood.”
