A lot of spice: Savory opens shop in Boulder
“Honey, could you pick up some Moroccan pink rosebuds and some smoked chardonnay sea salt on your way home?”
Such a request became a lot more plausible when Savory Spice opened a shop in Boulder last week on Broadway just north of Pearl Street. For lovers of exotic tastes, as well as a fresher versions of the staples in every household, the shop is a welcome addition to the local scene. It shares a wall with Oliv You & Me, which has been offering artisanal olive oils and vinegars since October.
Many Boulderites had been making the trek to the Savory Spice in Denver, says Dan Hayward, partner to Mike and Janet Johnston, who moved to Colorado in 2004 and opened the first Savory Spice store on Platte Street in Denver and a second store in Littleton.
“(Customers would say) ‘Please come to Boulder,'” Hayward says.
If the store’s first week was any indication, business was brisk even without publicity. That’s if you don’t count the aromatic advertisement of Cambodian lemongrass curry or one of the store’s many other intriguing blends wafting out the door. In honor of Boulder’s somewhat eclectic tastes, Hayward has put Savory’s three shelves of curry blends in the front of the store and has strategically placed a fan to blow a whiff of the heady aroma out onto Broadway for those passing by.
For those who follow their noses inside, there’s a trove of cooking treasures. Wishing you had some authentic wasabi powder, rather than the powdered horseradish, mustard and green dye that makes up what you buy in most stores? It’s here.
