Shoppers flood stores during last weekend before ChristmasBy Ted KarczewskiPatriotLedger.com

Braintree, MA — Cars were lined up and waiting for spots to open up at the Grossman Drive shopping center in Braintree on Sunday. Shoppers headed from their cars toward the stores, hoping to make big dents in their gift-buying lists.

A police officer directed traffic and helped guide shoppers into parking spaces, minimizing the chaos.

For every shopper who entered Kmart, Best Buy or one of the shopping center’s other big-box stores, another left, pushing a cart packed with bags.

The busiest shopping day of the year is typically the Saturday before Christmas, according to the National Retail Federation.

The group has projected holiday sales of $447.1 billion, a 2.3 percent from last year’s figure. The retail federation classifies the holiday shopping season as the 55-day period from Nov. 1 to Christmas Day.

Shoppers at the Grossman Drive plaza said this year’s special offers helped lure them to retailers’ aisles.

“This year’s been better for shopping,” said Petagaye Mushette of Brockton, as she headed to the nearby MBTA station with her shopping bags. “I got all my shopping done in time this year, because the sales have lasted longer and are generally better than last year.”
