Spending Appears to be Down On Mother’s DayBy Kyra JenkinsKMPH.com

It seems the number one gift for Mother’s Day in Fresno, was flowers.

The National Retail Federation estimated $2.7 billion would be spent on major gifts but that wasn’t the consensus on Sunday.

Men and women took to the streets in search of the perfect gift that wouldn’t hurt their wallets but still show appreciation for their moms. At the mall, restaurants and the street, most said ‘flowers’ best fit their love for their mothers, while not hurting their budget.

The NRF said earlier this month that because of the economic downturn, the majority of Mother’s Day shoppers would buy one major gift, instead of several smaller ones.

“Last year I got her some gold earrings with a matching bracelet. This year, she’s getting flowers,” said shopper Adrienna Luna.

Even though retail experts were optimistic, one flower shop took note of the slowing economic signs.

“We prepared for a lot more people to come. Prices are a lot better and so is our merchandise and prices. We build beautiful bouquets so the normal guy can afford flowers to say how much they love their moms,” said Dan Booye with D&L Roses.
