Optimistic couple taking time to sell the flowers
LaGrange, OH — When one door closed for Michele Marquis, she opened another — this one to a new floral shop.
As the executive director for Lorain County Junior Achievement, Marquis was faced with the long commute from her home in Penfield Township to Cleveland when the organization recently merged with Cuyahoga County Junior Achievement.
Instead, she decided to follow her heart.
Jason Marquis said his wife loved the creativity that came with her Junior Achievement job, so he asked her what made her happy.
“I told him, ‘I love gardening,’ ” she said, smiling.
Calling on that, her bachelor’s degree in design from the University of Akron and the need for a florist in LaGrange, the Marquis decided to take a chance on the economy and open a flower shop on the square.
The Enchanted Florist is scheduled to open next week at 109 Public Square.
The couple feel they have what it takes to make a new business succeed despite the economic crisis facing the nation.
“People (seem to be) very excited and happy that there will be a florist in town,” she said. “There is a need in LaGrange.”
The town has been without a floral shop since the Village Gift Shop closed last fall.
Now residents will no longer have to travel to nearby cities in to purchase flowers.
She said the shop’s big front window and location next to Subway on Public Square attracted her to the building and should help bring in foot traffic.
