Independent shops aim to stay relevant

Faced with the migration of consumers to the Internet or to large retailers for discounts, North Jersey independent toy store owners are focusing on specialization and the personal touch to bring customers back into their businesses.

Toy store owners said catering to a knowledgeable customer base, bringing in specialty toys not found in larger stores and finding new streams of revenue are the keys to keeping them relevant in a diminishing marketplace.
