Missouri — Amanda Vander Tuig has never been one to worry about what people think of her, which is a good thing because the owner of downtown gift shop The Butterfly Tattoo is outspoken about her views.
She is active on the microblogging site Twitter, where she frequently posts her opinions — in 140 characters or less — about local politics and the experience of being a small-business owner in downtown Columbia.
When contractors working to renovate Commerce Bank’s Ninth and Broadway facility closed down the sidewalk on her block last year, Vander Tuig blasted city officials on Twitter and via e-mail for allowing such a closure without a vote of the Columbia City Council, as is required by ordinance.
Her objections, in part, prompted the council to examine the issue, and the Public Works Department is studying improvements to the sidewalk closure process for downtown.
Vander Tuig also tweets about her experiences with customers and vendors — the good and bad. “I’m sure I offend people on Twitter,” she said. “If they’re turned off by my opinions, then that’s their loss.”
