Two decades of Healthy ThymesBy Laura DealNJHerald.com

Vernon — Twenty years ago, Healthy Thymes, a natural food market, was ahead of its time, offering to the consumer all kinds of products to nurture well-being of the body. Owners, Dani and Dan Segal, whose passion was embraced in this business, faithfully lived this kind of life, and now stand proudly at the forefront of an industry that has finally arrived.

As they mark their 20th anniversary with a new 2,500-square-foot store on state Route 94 in Vernon (just down the road from their old store), they are overwhelmed at the response from the community.

“It’s phenomenal,” Dan Segal said. “We have more than doubled our business, the parking lot is already too small. I was valet parking the first two weeks because people literally could not find a spot open. It’s a nice problem to have. I am overwhelmed, blessed.”

On Saturday, the store will be hosting its grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The day will include free samples, give-aways, tastings, prizes and discounts, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The couple started their shop in 1989 as Seed & Sprout with 900 square feet of space. They soon realized the confusion their store name had on the residents.

“We had people calling wondering if we sold grass seed,” Dan said. “Also many thought we were a maternity store,” Dani added.

Over the years, the shop moved several times and changed its name to Healthy Thymes.

“We wanted people to understand without having to think,” Dani said.

Dani Segal spent a lot of time at local schools (as their two children grew) teaching the students about nutrition, healthy eating and offering cooking lessons. She also taught at local senior centers, religious organizations and other venues in and around town.
