Westheimer paper store inspires shoppers’ DIY designBy Allison BagleyChron.com

A wasp marks the entrance of Paper Source, a new paper shop in Highland Village. The Chicago-based chain of stores pays tribute to its paper wasp logo on its website. After all, the insect that makes a pulpy nest out of chewed bark and leaves is the original papermaker.

Inside the doors, displays invite shoppers to revel in the art of paper. Shelves stock supplies for creating custom stationery, invitations, party goods, origami, and home décor such as paper bouquets. In-store bookbinding services allow customers to choose artisan papers and fabrics with which to cover a small album or notebook.

In addition to gifts, greeting cards, scrapbooking supplies and calendars, an entire wall is devoted to mix-and-match correspondence paper and envelopes sold by the piece. One can pair a bright yellow scalloped notecard, for example, with a red envelope. Unique sizes and shapes are available, like cards with pockets and photo inserts. Stickers, stamps, printed envelope liners and other embellishments complete the sophisticated sets, and staff members say the line is popular for custom wedding invitations.

Many of the retailer’s papers are recycled or eco-friendly.

Rich papers are sold by the sheet for gift wrapping and decorative use. Silk papers are sourced from Thailand; European architectural tracing paper has been hand-printed with paste flowers in soft colors. Another collection is inspired by 18th century etchings of flowers. Whimsical prints, kid-friendly designs and intricate lace-cut cotton paper from India are also on hand.

For those who would prefer to leave the ribbon-typing to the experts, gift-wrapping services are available. Shoppers select paper, tissue, boxes and other supplies for purchase and pay a fee of $4-10 based on package size.
