Yarn shops are borrowing gallery ‘crawl’ ideaBy Karen SullivanCharlotteObserver.com

Charlotte, NC – Charlotte-area yarn shops are preparing this week for the second annual Charlotte Yarn Crawl.

The event is designed to warm up sales in each shop as the holiday season approaches.

It’s also a way for crafters to get a better understanding of the different personality of each shop, said Debbie Davis, a Charlotte shop owner who organized the first event last year.

“All of the shops are unique,” Davis said. “We all carry different things, and we all have different styles.”

Davis’ Cotswold shop, The Fibre Studio at Yarns To Dye For, had been open about a year when a friend suggested a yarn crawl and told her such events are popular in other parts of the country.

The concept is already popular with art galleries in the Charlotte area. Gallery crawls are popular in the North Davidson Street arts district in north Charlotte and along South Boulevard.

During a crawl, gallery owners throw open their doors during preset hours, and visitors drop in.
