La Crosse, WI – Like other lifelong North Siders, Chad Johnson spent his childhood and every extra quarter at The Sweet Shop. At 15, owner Bill Espe offered him a part-time job.

That was 15 years ago last week.

A manager for eight years and the shop’s longest serving employee, Johnson is next in line to take over the North Side landmark. When he does, he will become the first outsider to run the family-owned candy and ice cream shop in nearly a century.
