Jill Brown started her baking business in the basement kitchen of her Canton home.

“I’d bake cakes for my children’s birthday parties,” said Brown. “When my kids’ friends saw the cakes, they’d want one for their birthday. I used to just do them for a hobby.”

Word spread about Brown’s marvelous concoctions and the hobby expanded.

“I got bored, and I wanted more artistic expression, so I started doing wedding cakes,” she said.

And that’s when the business really took off. In November, Jill’s Cakes & Bakes Bakery & Gift Shop opened in a high-visibility storefront in Canton’s historic downtown.

Now, though Brown specializes in custom wedding and special-occasion cakes, she also bakes and sells cookies, brownies, cheesecake and wedding cake by the slice.
