Store’s closing brings end to local tradition; Owner of Jewish-themed gift shop is retiringBy Deborah AlexanderDemocratandChronicle.com

Tradition — a gift shop specializing in Jewish-themed art, books, gifts, jewelry and music — is closing after 20 years in business.

Judy Wertheimer, the owner of the shop at 932 S. Winton Road at the Twelve Corners, is retiring.

“I really enjoyed the business,” the former Brighton elementary school teacher said. “I love the customers, vendors and artists we have met over the years. But it’s time I have a little bit more flexibility in my life.”

Wertheimer, 60, said the last day of business for Tradition is June 28.

She said business was “very good” and it has grown since the launch of the Web site, www.shopjudaica.com, a year ago. She said that the Web site will stay up for a while as a way for people to contact the shop.

The shop combines traditional religious books and items with contemporary Judaica, drawing Jewish and non-Jewish customers from upstate New York.
