Ten disheveled scarecrows nearly topple from a picnic table at R. B. Hunt Elementary, Nearby, another hangs cross-legged from a mediation instructor’s sign.

Down the road, a scarecrow at Island Doctors holds a sign in his tattered hand: “Flu shots.”

These scarecrows and others are popping up along Anastasia Boulevard, part of a grassroots efforts to bring novelty to the boulevard and get passersby to take note of the merchants.

“We wanted to have fun and get attention to this part of the boulevard,” said Steve Marrazzo, who owns Simple Gestures, 4 White Street, an art gallery and shop. “It’s making people smile.”

Marrazzo and wife Sue Marrazzo said they put their scarecrows out, then went around with fliers encouraging other businesses to do the same.

They even put out a sign.

“Welcome to the boulevard of scarecrows,” it says.
