Katonah, NY — Mary Mayland has always had an eye for style, which started with her popular Streets & Co. women’s retail stores in New York City in the 80’s. Now, the retail-savvy entrepreneur has reinvented herself in the opening of her new Baxter & Co. HOME in Katonah, NY this fall. The new home design and furnishing boutique offers one of a kind antiques and vintage accessories for the home and office and specializes in refinished and refurbished surfaces, most notably, the intricate gold, silver or copper leafing process.
“Whether it was clothing back then or home furnishings now, I’ve always had a passion for the details in complementing and completing ensembles,” said Mary Mayland. “My new venture is a perfect combination of the business savvy learned from the big city clothing industry and the decorative, interior design industry in rural New York.”
One trend taking off this season is making what’s old, new again. Baxter & Co HOME offers a variety of embellishment and refurbishing services. Among the most popular now is gilding or leafing. Gilding is an ornate process of covering an item in gold, silver or copper. Items can be further enhanced with jewels and other decorative stones to update a treasured possession.
“Gilding produces some stunning pieces. The transformation is absolutely amazing,” said Mayland. “We’re able to gild anything from fancy hairbrushes to bowls.”
The intricate process can take anywhere from 20 hours to several days to complete depending upon the size of the surface.
“The holiday season offers so many opportunities to enhance the warmth of your home. Even displaying beautiful holiday ornaments in painted bowls, rather than on the tree, is a great way to foster a festive environment,” adds Mayland.
