Small Business Saturday launched to encourage local shoppingBy Allison TriarsiKHOU.com

Houston, TX – While Black Friday has come to an end, the holiday shopping season continued in Houston with Small Business Saturday, a national event launched this year to encourage more shoppers to patronize smaller, family-owned businesses.

Houstonian Janice Bouchard, who works at the family-owned gift store Events, said she was happy to hear sales were up about 3 percent this past weekend.

“I was very pleasantly surprised. We’re doing very well,” said Bouchard.

Houston resident Beth Kelly said she drove 20 minutes to shop at the local establishment.

“You know, it’s really not in our neighborhood but I just wanted to bring my daughter because they’re just over the top on Christmas,” said shopper Beth Kelly.
