Should city officials always “shop local” when possible?

That topic drove a policy discussion at Brookings City Hall this week.

The subject first came about last fall, when city councilors briefly discussed whether the city should have a policy that restricts purchasing goods, services and other commodities to strictly local vendors.

City Manager Jeff Weldon on Tuesday said there is currently no formal policy for the City of Brookings in place, and he does not know of any other South Dakota municipality that has one.

But, Weldon said, he and other city staff try to use local goods and services to the greatest extent possible.
