Boston, MA – American Express struck such a strong chord with its Small Business Saturday campaign last year that the movement practically took off on its own this year, which was the intention all along.

The concept is simple. The big box stores advertise heavily to draw in shoppers on Black Friday. The online stores hype Cyber Monday. Rather than get left off the shopping list, independently owned, local stores claim the Saturday in between.

Although it’s a corporate-generated shopping holiday, small businesses can easily grab onto the concept and ride the coattails of the national publicity, which they are encouraged to do.
