Lansing, IA – Thirty-eight years after he bought the business, Paul Horsfall still works seven days a week at Horsfall’s Lansing Variety, an old-fashioned variety store at 300 Main St. in downtown Lansing.

But the number of old-time variety stores continues to shrink, said Horsfall, who figures he has a million items for sale in his century-old building.

“You need the commitment to work seven days a week and the financial ability to operate through the ups and downs” of the economy, the 59-year-old Horsfall said.
