NRF Calls on Congress to Pass Sales Tax Fairness Legislation

The National Retail Federation today issued the following statement from Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French following a news conference with state and local officials who urged Congress to act on sales tax fairness legislation in the lame duck session:

“Congress has delayed action on this retail industry priority for far too long. Now is the time for action. Now is the time for Congress to pass sales tax fairness legislation.

“Failure to pass this commonsense measure threatens the viability of Main Street merchants and small business owners who live and work in communities across America.

“A healthy and vibrant retail sector is essential to local communities, particularly for strong employment and a stable tax base. To ensure the vitality of local retailers, we need Congress to level the sales tax playing field once and for all.”

NRF is the world’s largest retail trade association, representing discount and department stores, home goods and specialty stores, Main Street merchants, grocers, Wholesalers, chain restaurants and internet retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries abroad. Retailers operate more than 3.6 million U.S. establishments that support one in four U.S. jobs – 42 million working Americans. Contributing $2.6 trillion to annual GDP, retail is a daily barometer for the nation’s economy. NRF’s This is Retail campaign highlights the industry’s opportunities for life-long careers, how retailers strengthen communities, and the critical role that retail plays in driving innovation. www.nrf.com
