Nubble Gift Shop Revenues up 82 Percent
York, ME – The Sohier Park Welcome Center Gift Shop at the Nubble has had a meteoric success since it was expanded in time for last summer’s tourist season. In just those few months, revenues nearly doubled, going from $274,000 in the summer of 2013 to nearly $500,000 – an 82 percent increase.
As a result, Parks and Recreation director Mike Sullivan told the Budget Committee Thursday night, the department is going to be able to repay taxpayers the $150,000 it borrowed in 2013 for the expansion in two years instead of five years. And if this trajectory continues, funding to keep the iconic Cape Neddick Light Station at the Nubble in good repair will be assured in perpetuity.
“It’s been a pretty remarkable year,” Sullivan said of the increase in gift shop revenue. “We’ve been able to display more items, bring in a lot more merchandise. We kind of hit this one out of the park.”
