WINNER: Kitchen basics from bambu
bambu is a company that designs, develops, and markets green products for the kitchen and home. Each utensil from the Kitchen Basics line is shaped from a single piece of bamboo, and, according to bambu owner Jeff Delkin, does not use adhesives or a lacquer finish. Instead, a food-safe oil is used to preserve and protect the utensils. Bamboo is a popular choice for green material because it can be harvested sustainably.
“These essential tools for the kitchen reflect the company’s emphasis on simple, functional design,” says Delkin. The New York and Shanghai-based company also supports the communities in which it operates by using local artists and craftspeople, as well as focuses on green efforts buy having production centers near the bamboo source. However, Delkin admits the transportation issue is the weak link in its green production process. “But the renewable material we prefer is not available in the U.S., and it is always better to use fresh cut [stalks]. Working with it when it is freshly cut produces a higher quality product,” he explains. Delkin adds that lessening the carbon footprint is important, and the company has commissioned a carbon study to look at the impact on the supply chain and how to best import the product.
