A World of Butterflies: Treasures Gift Shop brings rainforest to life
The rainforest comes to life at Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale, Arizona, the largest butterfly conservatory in the U.S.
Dee Mangulins, executive director of Butterfly Wonderland, said the immersive experience opened in 2013 and brings guests into the heart of the rainforest, where they can observe thousands of butterflies. It features various exhibits, including the Emergence Gallery, where visitors can watch butterflies transform from their chrysalises, and a Bee Exhibit, highlighting the role of honeybees in pollination. Visitors can also watch a 14-minute 3D film, “Flight of the Butterflies”, about the migration of monarch butterflies.

Beyond butterflies, the exhibit also gives visitors a more comprehensive experience of the animals found within the ecosystem and includes galleries of tropical fish, reptiles, amphibians and tropical birds found in the rainforest.
“These exhibits were carefully curated to provide a more holistic understanding of rainforests,” Mangulins said. “Butterfly Wonderland encompasses storytelling, hands-on experiences and educational displays, where visitors leave not only entertained but also inspired to support sustainability and conservation efforts that safeguard the Earth’s most precious rainforests.”
As a destination dedicated to the world of insects, Butterfly Wonderland also brings a fun approach to education with its Edible Insect Vending Machine. This attraction lets guests learn about entomophagy — the practice of eating insects — by offering edible treats such as chocolate-covered insects, spicy mealworms and scorpion lollipops. The vending machine profits also support Butterfly Wonderland Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Butterfly Wonderland that funds conservation efforts and provides educational field trips for Title 1 schools.
PRESERVING MEMORIES
Treasures Gift Shop is an extension of the Butterfly Wonderland experience, offering a variety of items that capture the beauty and magic of butterflies, Mangulins said.
“Whether you’re looking for a special keepsake from a visit or a gift that embodies the wonder of nature, the shop is filled with plenty of options at a variety of price points,” she said. The shop is also open to visitors that don’t visit Butterfly Wonderland.
The gift shop offers a mix of souvenirs, including butterfly-themed jewelry, apparel, plush toys, postcards and stationery, and Butterfly Wonderland-branded items. More unique gifts include butterfly kits for raising butterflies at home, butterfly garden kits and locally produced honey from Arizona beekeepers. For collectors, the shop also offers preserved butterflies in acrylic displays, complete with species information and their country of origin.

Mangulins said Treasures Gift Shop’s bestsellers include plush animals — with butterflies leading the pack — followed by plush insects and aquatic creatures. Other popular items include handcrafted ladies’ fine jewelry by artists in the U.S. as well as apparel featuring inspirational sayings and nature- inspired designs made from natural fabrics. Bestsellers for children range from fun gardening kits to educational Life Cycle kits.
“Whether guests want to preserve the beauty of their favorite butterfly species through apparel, jewelry, plush toys or STEM-focused books and educational toys for young minds, the shop is filled with treasures that extend the magic of the experience,” Mangulins said.
Lately, Mangulins said guests are being more mindful of both the price and quality of material.
“We prioritize offering apparel made from preshrunk, soft fabrics that are easy to care for, meeting both comfort and durability needs,” Mangulins said. “When it comes to plush toys, the more it represents a memory for the child, the happier the guest is. For jewelry, there’s a growing preference for delicate earrings and necklaces featuring butterflies with Swarovski crystals — light, colorful, and delicately crafted pieces.”
SPARKING WONDER
The mission of the Treasures Gift Shop is to ensure that every guest leaves with a smile, knowing that a butterfly “loved” them today, Mangulins said.
“We aim to create lasting memories — children giggling in delight and guests excited by the beauty of the butterfly reflected in their purchase,” she said. “We hope every piece captures the essence of Butterfly Wonderland, offering a lasting reminder of the beauty and magic the guest encountered.”
Treasures Gift Shop buys from U.S. vendors at major trade shows as well as local artists in Arizona. Mangulins said the shop focuses on creating a story around popular themes, like Monarch butterflies, and offers a range of products — from apparel and handbags to jewelry, scarves, and even books — that reflect the theme.

“We pay close attention to which butterflies — or other animals — excite our visitors the most, allowing us to build a collection that mirrors their interests,” she said. “Additionally, we carefully choose inspirational messaging for the apparel, knowing that the butterfly symbolizes change, peace, and personal growth — themes that many guests connect with on a personal level.”
Mangulins said the Butterfly Wonderland experience takes guests back to childhood, sparking a sense of wonder and connection with the delicate beauty of butterflies, while also being an opportunity to introduce children to the fascinating world of butterflies.
“For many, the butterfly is a symbol of transformation, remembrance and peace, making the items in Treasures a meaningful gift or keepsake that can extend the unforgettable experience long after one visits,” she said.
