Monterey Street is one of the main shopping areas in downtown San Luis Obispo. Located amid the mix of national chains and independent stores is an independent fair trade store, HumanKind. Operating as a single-location non-profit retail store guided by a volunteer board of directors since 2009, all products are handmade by artisans in developing countries. Overseeing a mostly volunteer staff, store manager LynAnne Weist is passionate about fair trade and spent a year as a market and product design advisor, working alongside artisans in Cambodia to develop products that would appeal to western tastes. The staff at HumanKind is committed to providing vital fair income to artisans in the developing world by selling their products and sharing their stories in San Luis Obispo and beyond.
