Beyond the Turmoil
With mounting concerns over escalating tariffs and economic uncertainty, U.S. retailers face an unsettling question regarding their busiest time of year: Is the holiday season in peril?
In April, U.S. costume and toy companies sounded the alarm that the proposed tariffs on imports could “wipe out” Halloween and “severely disrupt” Christmas. An ominous message at best — a devastating one at worst.
But let me be clear: As real as the pressures are on retailers and wholesalers alike, so is the opportunity to rise to the occasion — something our industry is particularly skilled at.
It’s time to get creative, overprepare and spread the word. The potential of tariffs and other economic policies may shift the landscape, but they don’t have to steal the season. Halloween and Christmas aren’t merely about costumes, candy and gifts — they’re about connection,
celebration and hope.
We’ve been presented with a potential hurdle, yes, but it’s also our chance to shine.
Independent retailers possess something that e-commerce giants or big-box stores simply cannot replicate: curated finds, personal service and a sense of community. In a world that is increasingly seeking authenticity, that is a superpower.
Particularly during times that feel uncertain, retailers are a reprieve. The events you host bring the community together and encourage connection, comfort and celebration when it’s needed most.
Encourage your customers to be part of the solution as well. By shopping earlier, embracing flexibility and making a point to shop locally whenever possible, they can help ensure that the holiday spirit — and the small businesses that bring it to life — endure.
So spread the word with other retailers, wholesalers, industry advocates and customers. At the end of the day, we are capable of so much more together.
This holiday season, string the lights, put the pumpkins out, set up the Christmas trees. Because no matter what happens around us that is out of our control, the holidays are ours to make meaningful — and unstoppable.
Until next issue,
