Coast to Coast

As seen in Waterfront Living 2025.

As the editorial team worked on another annual edition of Waterfront Living, I kept returning to one undeniable truth: retail, like the coasts of the U.S., is incredibly diverse.

Carly McFadden headshotAs of 2022, almost 31% of the U.S. population reside in coastal counties, which make up just 17% of the country’s land mass. These coastlines are along the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf Coast and the Great Lakes. Additionally, U.S. beaches receive 3.4 billion visits annually, more than the combined attendance of all national and state parks, amusement parks and major sporting events.

Simply put, Americans intentionally seek out the lifestyles associated with the coast.

But these lifestyles can look different. Compare the rugged, adventure-seeking geography of the Pacific Northwest with the sun- soaked, sandy beaches and laid-back charm of the Gulf Coast. Think about the Northeast — where luxury and history blend to create a timeless, nautical “je ne sais quoi” — versus the bold, colorful and high-energy coastline of Miami. The American coastline offers an experience for every preference.

The diversity across these waterfront communities is mirrored through its gift retailers, as well. At the heart of it all, a retailer reflects the preferences, styles and values of the people who make up the surrounding community.

In these pages, you’ll find myriad products from wholesalers who have their finger on the pulse of all things coastal style. While trends certainly emerge and thrive, consider the community you serve and remember that you are their mirror, shaping the experience of coastal living through your product offerings. Your job is to reflect both the spirit of your region and the individuality of its people.

Each product debut, each collection and each brand offers a glimpse into a way of life — a life that exudes comfort, beauty and connection to nature. What does that life look like where you’re located? That’s for you to define and curate, and I hope this special edition helps you do just that.

The allure of coastal living lies not merely in glowing sunsets or the way the waves crash on the shore, but also in how each region has shaped its own identity. This diversity is what makes retail so exciting today. It’s not just about trends; it’s about honoring tradition, embracing change and celebrating nature all at once — no matter which coast you call home.

Until next issue,
