Deck the Halls By Poornima Apte

Cups and mugs do double duty here as ornaments! When your entire store is getting decked up for the holidays, why ignore the dishes? This interesting holiday display for tabletop allows mugs to be strung neatly from a Christmas wreath. Not only does the display showcase the china in a creative fashion, it also adds a touch of whimsy to the overall effect. Make sure to set up this display away from high-traffic areas of your store. If little children visit often, remember to adjust the height accordingly—high enough to prevent easy access.

Height is always an important element in visual merchandising. This fantasy land display gets high marks for implementing this principle to good effect. White boxes stacked neatly and diagonal cubbies keep interest alive. The bright cubby colors also add a touch of spice to the display, while glitter and sparkle cement a perfect fantasy theme.

This display is a classic example of using texture in all the right ways. Notice how the fuzzy grey is worked in through the whole unit: from the fuzzy ornaments to the pillow on the chair down to the doggie pillow on the bottom. Height, texture and colors all work together in a display that immediately catches the eye. The sleeping dog adds to the cozy look the visual merchandisers were hoping to achieve. This point of interest also generated a lot of traffic.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with color. The colored Christmas tree on the left, is a great palette to showcase ornaments that might have been lost in more traditional presentations. It is easy to get carried away with color though. Make sure the eye has some way to tie the theme across the display. Here the fuchsia in the mannequin’s shirt is carried through to the pillow on the floor. Notice the upside down tree at the back –another fun way to showcase ornaments without taking up precious floor space.

For a more organic feel to your Christmas displays, try using tree branches and assorted twigs as shown here. Notice how the groupings of the ornaments draw the eye in. Using varying heights to showcase bright merchandise against a drab wall, works to great advantage here. Colors in contrast—red against the dark brown of the branches, even the dark brown against the beige wall—work to create a soothing and alluring Zen-like display.
