Editor’s Letter: Celebrating the Journey
As we close the chapter that is 2024, I reflect on all the twists and turns that retail has encountered not just in the last 12 months — but in the last several years. With headwinds like inflation, supply chain disruptions and an overall wariness of the economy, it sure has been a wild ride.
But despite all the ups, downs and changes we’ve faced, there’s a lot to celebrate. Let’s share some happy economic news, shall we?
In the final days of October, the Commerce Department announced that U.S. gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, expanded at a 2.8% annual rate in 2024’s third quarter, driven by robust consumer spending that grew at a 3.7% rate.
The National Retail Federation (NRF) forecasts that holiday spending will reach a new record this year per person. NRF also predicts overall holiday spending to grow between 2.5% and 3.5% over 2023 — that equates to between $979.5 billion and $989 billion in total.
As a retailer, that’s certainly some news worth celebrating. Running a business is no easy feat, but remaining optimistic and commemorating life’s moments — big and small — go a long way.
In this special annual issue of Celebrations & Occasions, presented by Gift Shop® Plus and Stationery Trends, you’ll meet two retailers who wholeheartedly embrace this mindset. They founded their businesses with the mission to bring joy, warmth and merriment to their communities. In a world that’s ever- changing, their spirit of celebration remains constant. Read more about each retailer on page 22, our cover story, and page 26.
Everyone can use a reason to celebrate, and this issue presents all the party essentials to do just that. From birthdays to weddings to showers to let’s- just-let-loose festivities, within these pages are dozens of products and trends that customers are loving.
So as you peruse this issue, I hope you feel inspired to celebrate life’s occasions — big and small. This industry is here to support, inspire and remind one another that there is always something to celebrate — whether it’s hopeful economic news, a positive customer review or a business milestone.
Whatever the reason, let’s celebrate together.
Until next time,
