Visitor Services Supervisor Jane Riley
Echoes, the Manassas Museum Store
Manassas, VA

What makes your store unique?

We devote our energy to creating and developing custom gifts that showcase Manassas and its rich history — things you cannot find anywhere else. We appeal not only to tourists, but to local community residents as well. We maintain a nice mix of choices, from souvenirs, books, children’s toys, jewelry and seasonal items.

What is your retail background?

None. I worked in many different fields including fundraising for the museum until I was offered this position. I learned a great deal from being part of the Museum Store Association, a terrific group of colleagues that are always willing to share ideas. I’ve been here almost 15 years — best job I ever had. Great people in a wonderful community.

What is the most popular product in your store?

Our custom products — Christmas ornaments, Manassas gifts, souvenirs and Virginia products. Next would be our great book selection and jewelry. Our mantra is: “Distinctive gifts with a local flair.”

What are your top three retail tips?

Outstanding customer service! The front desk staff goes out of their way to make each and every visitor feel welcome and make sure they enjoy their visit to the museum and receive individual attention. You can train anyone to run a point-of-sale system, but having the people with great attitudes is what makes the biggest difference. Bringing in new products often and moving merchandise around to keep it looking fresh and appropriate for the season. Keeping the store clean and bright — we do lots of dusting and polishing.
