Gift Shop Plus Winter 2022
Mood Enhancer By Julie McCallum

A note from Gift Shop Plus editor-in-chief

Kindness matters. So does our mental health, and social justice, and equality, as well as personal religious beliefs. And by all means,

don’t forget to laugh because these trends that are
so prevalent in our society are HEAVY! Humorous products are occupying more shelf space as the need to laugh has never been greater. Consumers are looking for merchandise that gives them inspiration or an outlet for expression – anything that fits their current mood. And like the past year, that could fluctuate. This issue’s Trend Report looks at the Moods of 2022 beginning on page 41.

Everyone always ends up gathering in the kitchen. The Kitchen Lookbook, starting on page 74, focuses on this year’s trends of sustainability, colors and patterns. Planning for the coming year of gatherings and celebrations will be on retailers’ minds now that 2021 is a wrap. The Early Holiday ‘22 Preview on page 90 and the new-to-market roundup on page 98 have all the inspiration for holiday merchandise and gifting needed for a spectacular 2022.

Celebrating earth, nature, and outdoor living, home décor trends are reflecting the mega trend
of environmental awareness. The home industry is listening, as reflected by the offerings featured in the Driving it Home article on page 104. The increase in pets in the majority of U.S. households has created
a demand for upscale and customized pet products. Check out the latest on page 114.

“I believe the only way to combat darkness is to create light. When you give, you create space to receive,” wrote Tara Riceberg. The California store owner is a spark to other retailers and her customers. In a recent conversation, she commented, “It’s all about connection and community. No one store keeps any vendor in business. We all need to work together to keep our favorite brands, artists, reps, showrooms, etc. in business. Other stores aren’t my competition, they’re my teammates.” We sat down virtually with Riceberg to talk about the joy of gifts and her stores in Hollywood. Learn more on page 120.

It is my wish for the new year that we can be a spark for your business with inspiration and ideas for a fantastic year of retailing. Nothing would put me in a better mood!
