Peer Perspective: Natalie Munderville, National Women’s Hall of Fame

Natalie Munderville, Education Coordinator
National Women’s Hall of Fame
Location Seneca Falls, NY
Tell me about the range of women in the NWHOF. How are these women selected and inducted? There are currently 276 Inductees in the National Women’s Hall of Fame, and we induct 10-12 women every 2 years. Everyone in the Hall is nominated by the general public. Each Induction cycle, we gather all of the public nominations and send them to a panel of adjudicators (which also changes each Induction cycle). The adjudication panel consists of living Inductees, as well as folks of a high standing in their field who we ask to do us the honor of presiding on the panel. Each adjudicator receives 5-10 nominees in their field of expertise to review. At the conclusion of this process, we compile all adjudication data and determine the 10-12 highest ranked women.
What types of items sell in the gift shop? We offer Hall-themed apparel, including children’s apparel. We also offer candles, magnets, post cards, stickers, pint glasses, thermos’ and mugs, and a variety of books by and about our Inductees.
What do you have planned, in terms of a gift shop, once the HOF moves to The Mill? Without a doubt, we will be expanding— but there are not currently concrete design plans.
Do you have any temporary exhibits, or are they all permanent? If temporary, what are/were some of the most-visited ones? We have temporary exhibits. Our most recent Pride exhibit has been very popular.
Why do you think it’s so important for people to know about the NWHOF? Women’s achievements, today and throughout history, are often left out of textbooks— forgotten or cast aside. The National Women’s Hall of Fame stands to challenge that reality. We document and display women’s incredible contributions to society, and women’s fascinating and adventure-filled biographies. Anyone who enters the Hall will be inspired by the magnificence and accomplishment of the women who line our walls.
What’s in store for the HOF in the next 5-10 years? We continue to make our long-awaited move to the historic Seneca Knitting Mill by 2020. Once we finish the move, we will be a 4-story facility with a full research library, rotating and permanent exhibits. Expansion is on the horizon and we could not be more excited to see what is to come!
