Fairhaven business owner shifts gears, starts pet gift storeBy Dave GallagherBellinghamHerald.com

Home décor is one of the toughest retail businesses to be in during this economic crunch, so Anne Kneesch has revamped her business to target a different client base – pet owners.

Kneesch, who owned Artesano’s in Fairhaven for more than three years, phased out that business earlier this month and replaced it with Animal Crackers, a pet-themed gift store. It’s at the same spot at 1010 Harris Ave., Suite 102. The new store offers a variety of gift options, including pet pillows, all-natural treats and some supplies, such as collars and leashes. Customers from Artesano’s will recognize some of the animal-themed products Kneesch decided to stick with, including giraffe statues.

She decided to make the change after being unable to sell Artesano’s. Much of her product line was unique home décor products, particularly from Mexico.

“The summer was OK (for sales), but it really slowed down in the fall,” Kneesch said. “I had some interest when I tried to sell the store, but it didn’t work out.”

While selling pet gift products is different, Kneesch has plenty of experience in the canine industry. Prior to taking over Artesano’s she spent 30 years showing Russian wolfhounds in competitions.

She said the response to the new store in the first few weeks has been good.

“Customer reaction has been very positive, although some are disappointed to see Artesano’s gone,” Kneesch said.

“What’s important now is listening to what customers are looking for. One thing I’ve learned is to have reasonably priced products, and to not go too high-end.”

The impact of the economic turmoil has been felt throughout Fairhaven, but Kneesch is hopeful that business will start picking up again this spring.
